Planting Natives

Last week, student and parent volunteers planted resilient native plants in the flowerbed in front of the McNeil entrance (Big Bluestem, Scarlet Beebalm, Blazing Star, Black Eye Susan, Purple Coneflower, Foxglove Beardstongue, Purple Poppy Mallow, Creeping Phlox, Wild Pink, and Barren Strawberry).

This is part of a campus-wide effort to beautify our school sustainably, to create habitat for pollinators and birds as well as an exiting and clean environment for our students. This effort started last year at the initiative of members from The Green Avengers, a student group.

Last year we planted Milkweed, Willows, Ninebarks, and Sumacs around the Wellness Trail. This year, the hill along the road to the lower soccer field parking lot was also planted with native Sumacs.

If you are interested in joining these efforts, and learning about gardening with native plants, please contact me, Kathy McGrath or Stirling Cousins.
